My home group has been together since the late 1980s. In 2010, due to family responsibilities some of us were “scattered” to three different states 1000 miles apart. We continued going to in-person meetings, but one of the two members who’d moved the farthest away put together a website and got an email account for the “contact us” feature on our website. Our group, having been formed as a bona fide A.A. group just as we read about in the Foreword to Second Edition, “Bill’s Story” and “A Vision For You,” knew we needed and wanted to remain connected in our service endeavors, and the website and online meetings allowed for that. In 2015, two of us joined OIAA’s Steppers Committee in order to be of service at the personal level.
How rewarding it is to have been given the opportunity to “be there” in cyberspace when nothing else seems available in the wee hours of the morning for the one who is struggling, or for whom the darkness has sunk in or the light has just come on! Our call to provide information and resources—along with comfort, encouragement and identification—was never as critical and as evident these past 8+ years as during the pandemic.
